Jim is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. Prior to founding his own actuarial consulting firm in 1980, Jim had a decade of experience in the insurance industry in different actuarial positions.

Since founding the firm, Jim’s philosophy has always been to have our clients understand our actuarial methodologies and to remove the mystery surrounding actuarial calculations.  It is important that clients understand the assumptions we utilize in our actuarial calculations, how and why they were derived, and the monetary impact of those assumptions.  With the firm, Jim has worked on actuarial calculations of reserves of insurance companies and rate reviews and filings for all lines of insurance.  He has provided advice to captive and self- insurance clients (over 600 clients); to insurance companies writing casualty business in the US and Canada; and to several insurance departments and public advocate agencies.  He has also worked on the development of experience rating plans and new products, reinsurance advice and other similar actuarial work.

Starting his actuarial career at Insurance Services Office, Jim worked on ratemaking for Homeowners and Auto Losses (personal and commercial); and produced special studies on expenses and taxes and investment income.  Jim went on to North American Reinsurance Corporation (a division of Swiss Re.) working on pricing and reserving all types of reinsurance treaties and for all lines of insurance.  At his last company before starting his own firm, he was appointed vice president at Casualty Woodward and Fondiller Inc.  There he did actuarial consulting for all lines, and worked closely with state insurance funds on reserving and ratemaking.

Jim’s interests include a variety of sports, and he coached 32 teams while living in Ridgewood, NJ. Jim has been married to Roseanne for over 40 years and has two grown boys, both of whom are in the insurance business, Andy as a Senior Vice President for Alliant Brokerage, and Bill as Director of Predictive Modeling for CNA.  His outside pursuits include being a director for The City College Foundation, in which he has established scholarships for needy students. In addition, he has established Internships at SGRisk for promising math students who are interested in pursuing an actuarial career. For those and other contributions, he was honored as the City College Presidential Award winner in 2014.

His over fifty years in the financial and insurance fields have given him a broad perspective on the property-casualty industry.  He is a graduate of the City College of New York, and was accepted in NYU’s Ph.D program.
